A new chapter

Today marks a significant step on my journey.

I’ve left a role which was secure and comfortable but deeply frustrating and demoralising.

And today I’m starting to follow my dreams by taking up a new job as a personal trainer.

There are mixed emotions to be sure. It’s unnerving to be going from being experienced, connected and in a familiar, well-respected profession, to starting from the ground floor.

And the fears do pop up. What if this career change is a terrible mistake? Will people think I’m crazy to start again at the beginning at my age? Will I be exposed as an imposter, when there’s so much I still have to learn? What if nobody wants what I have to offer?

A year ago those fears were holding me trapped. They haven’t gone away. But over the last year something has shifted. I don’t know what lies ahead, but the only way to find out is to try.

New shoes may give you blisters while your feet get used to them, but hanging on to worn out shoes can give you lasting injuries. Sometimes you need to risk the blisters to get where you need to go.

I bring with me what I have learned from my years of coaching, from my own fitness journey, from the learning I’ve done my best to internalise over the last six months of hard work.

And perhaps most importantly I bring with me my passion for helping people change. That moment, that spark, which creates the potential for transformation.

That’s what I’m following, and I hope to find it over and over again on the path ahead.
