A runner's foot landing on a wet road, with water splashing. But the lighting makes this seem a strong and positive image, showing someone powering through difficult conditions.

Running in the rain

When I started running, I used to be very much a fair weather runner.

But one day I just had no choice – it was go or abandon my C25k programme.

So I headed out in the rain anyway.

And at first it was miserable and soggy.

But there was a point when I realised my perspective had shifted. I saw the water steaming off my arms as they powered through the rain.

And I was amazed at how much heat my body was generating as I ran. An almost magical feeling of strength, of power over the elements.

Drying off afterwards, with a very welcome hot drink, I felt incredibly proud of myself for progressing my training despite the horrible weather.

And it showed me that pushing through discomfort can be rewarding.

I’m not quite so good at doing that with my other life goals yet.

But I suspect, like running in the rain, it’s something I will get used to.
