It’s funny how the run up to taking a decision can be so much harder than actually taking it.
I’ve been hesitating for far too long about leaving my old job, which hasn’t been right for me for many years. I’ve dithered one way and another, sometimes desperate to leave, sometimes feeling things were improving. An extraordinary amount of indecision and angst.
Sometimes overly apprehensive about what leaving might feel like, sometimes overly optimistic about what staying might be.
I’ve wrestled with questions of who I am, what I want to achieve with my life, what I need to feel satisfied with my job, where my interests lie and how I want to be valued.
I had an opportunity to leave last year, but chose not to go. Looking back, I think that was the right call. Back then I had a clear idea of what I didn’t want, but didn’t have a clear sense of what I did want. I didn’t have relevant qualifications or a plan to get them.
No wonder it felt as scary as leaping off a cliff when I couldn’t see whether there was sea or rocks below.
I decided that I needed to pause, and take the time to work through this. Working with a coach https://www.borntobebold.co.uk/boldertogethercoachingprogramme helped me think through what I wanted to do, understand myself better and come up with a plan. Crucially I also had support from others going through a similar journey.
So this time, when the opportunity to leave came up, it felt very different. I have a vision, a plan, relevant qualifications and a new role to start. There’s a bit of nervousness, but more clarity and more excitement.
Coaching helped me get to the point where I was able to take that step, but with the feeling that I was walking down another step in a nice clear staircase, not jumping off a cliff.
I still need to keep my footing, but it’s a lot less scary.
What stairs could coaching help you put in place?
