A new routine for a new life

Being in limbo can be a great time to start to plan ahead.

I know my existing routines won’t work for me as I shift to a new way of working. At least to begin with I will have plenty of time, but with so much open diary space there’s a risk that I won’t make the most of that time. So structure and prioritisation will be important.

Now feels like a good point to start designing a new routine, as I would do for someone I am coaching, starting by thinking about what I want to make time for in my days.

  • Friends and family time – in particular seeing my son before school and after school, and during the holidays. Also making sure I take time to spend with my husband and friends.
  • Learning – continuing my journey as a coach and personal trainer, through formal learning and listening to podcasts
  • My gym role shifts – not just making sure I show up ready to go, but having a plan for what I want to do with my time.
  • Keeping up my own training – running and strength training with a bit of cross training too.
  • Client contact – Building a system to keep good details of clients and potential clients, and building a routine of checking in.
  • Keeping up my blog and social media content and thinking of ways to find a wider audience who are interested.
  • Fun outside work – time with friends and doing things I enjoy like singing.

So these are top of the list. What have I left out?

Looking at my lifeworkfitness wheel of life helpfully reminds me that to look after my physical wellbeing I also need to think about mobility (I do tend to neglect this!). I should also avoid squeezing out appropriate attention to self care, nutrition and sleep. So those join the list.

That’s already quite a lot, so getting the right balance will be important. I’ll expand on how I use the wheel of life to explore my balance in a follow up post.

Meantime, what do you want to make time for in your life? Do you know what’s on your priority list, and what you might have forgotten to make time for?
