New ACSM guidelines came out earlier this year – I love the emphasis on consistency over complexity.

It underpins my sense that as a personal trainer, the coaching skills that you bring to motivating clients are more important than ability to come up with the latest flashy technique.

I’ve been learning a lot about different techniques in my PT course. And it’s good to have varied options available to find what works for each person. It will allow me to switch up programmes often enough to keep training interesting. And serious athletes may benefit from more challenging techniques.

But fundamentally what matters is to do what you can and stick to it.
